In the Southeast Austin area, our pets can be pron In the Southeast Austin area, our pets can be prone to rattlesnake bites as the temperature warms and snakes are more active. Some practical prevention methods include keeping your yard well maintained and checking the yard before turning out your pet.

A vaccine against rattlesnake venom is available, and we offer this year round. This vaccine works by stimulating an animal's immunity to defend against rattlesnake venom, which greatly reduces the severity of a bite (less swelling, less pain, less antivenom needed, so overall this means a lower vet bill and faster recovery for the pet). However, this does not provide total immunity against a bite.

Typical signs of a snake bite include lethargy, signs of pain, and swelling in the area of the bite. If you suspect your pet has been bitten, you should seek medical attention from a veterinarian immediately. Bites from venomous snakes can been very painful and can even result in death. Pets that have been bitten can also experience rapid swings in health, so prompt attention is important.

The most potent treatment for a snakebite is antivenom. We do have antivenom on hand at all times, as well as offer in-house diagnostics that can provide clues to how a pet is reacting to envenomation.

Please contact us at 512-385-0486 if you have any questions about the rattlesnake vaccine, or if you suspect your pet has been bitten by a snake. Stay safe out there!
